As electric vehicles become more popular, so too does the need for EV chargers. While many EV owners rely on public charging stations, more and more are opting to install a Type 2 EV charger at home. In this article, we'll discuss the different types of EV chargers available, the benefits of installing a smart EV charger, the cost of EV charger installation, and resources for EV grants in the UK.
Types of EV Chargers
There are three main types of EV chargers: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Level 1 chargers use a standard 120-volt outlet and can take up to 20 hours to fully charge an EV. Level 2 chargers, on the other hand, use a 240-volt outlet and can charge an EV in 4 to 8 hours. Finally, Level 3 chargers, also known as DC fast chargers, can charge an EV to 80% in just 30 minutes.
The most common type of EV charger used for home installations is the Level 2, or Type 2 EV charger. These chargers are faster than Level 1 chargers and can be installed indoors or outdoors. They are also more versatile, as they can be used with different EV models.
Benefits of Smart EV Chargers
While a standard EV charger will get the job done, a smart EV charger offers additional benefits. Smart chargers are internet-connected and allow for remote monitoring and management. They can also be programmed to charge during off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper, which can save you money on your energy bill.
Smart chargers can also communicate with the grid, helping to balance the load and prevent blackouts. Additionally, some smart chargers have built-in safety features that can detect faults and shut off power if necessary.
